Hello all.

I'm running xp pro sp2 and all updates. I have a 1 year old laptop 1.5gz
processor. It boots up fine, but takes up to 5 minutes to log on. What is
going on? I am an administrator.

It's not spyware or a virus, i scenned for both many times.
My SMART harddrive isn't giving any errors.

Hell Ryan,

The bootup process can be slowed down due to many programs trying to load at startup. You might want
to disable programs from loading at startup. This can be usually done from within the program
options. You can also manually disable such programs form the System Configurations Utility. More
info here:

Hi Anando,
The link you provided is really usefull. However I went to my MSConfig and
in the Startup Tab, I found the items which starts on Bootup. Among those
items I found a item which doesn't neither have a name nor command, but
location was provided as :
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Is this a Virus or an
Adware or Spyware or something harmefull?

Thanks,

Hifni

Try unchecking the entry then reboot, if it comes back enabled then it
*could* be a suspicious item.
Look at the mentioned registry key for a clue to what file is being
called, then rename it *.old, next run up-to-date AV
and AD-Aware programs from safe mode.

If it's blank then it is blank and doesn't do anything. Some program should have deleted the value rather than the value's content.

Hello,

It sure does sound suspicious. You might want to scan your computer for possible spyware. Some good
info about spyware scanning can be found here:

Hope this helps.

Also dont forget to check your HD for fragmentation. With file sizes getting so huge by the day the drive tends to get highly fragmented in no time. DO make defragmentation a part of routine system maintenance. If you cant do it manually, set an automatic sotware to the job.
