slow login with XP Pro

Hi

I bought a new sony Vaio laptop and it is great once I get logged in but it
can take about 1 minute from when I type in my username and password until
the computer is really ready to use ?

any ideas how to speed this up ?

The computer probably searches for a DHCP server. You can speed it up by
specifing the IP you want to use manually. ie. 192.168.0.1
 
do you think that is what is slowing it down ? the hard disk seems to go
bonkers during log in ?
