Hi,

I have installed Windows 2000 server-SP3 and enabled
Terminal services on HP Proliant DL 380 G3 server/ Dual
3.06 GHz processors/2.5 GB memory/2*72GB RAID1/3*72 GB
RAID5.

When 20-23 users login at the same time using terminal
services client from Windows 2000 professional computers
it takes 3 minutes just to complete login for all users
and they can start working. If the users who logged in
first start launching applications, others login proces
will get delayed further.

Any idea about this problem?

I would monitor the server with Performance monitor to see if the
bottleneck is CPU, memory , NIC or disk system.
Also have a look at the sizes of the user profiles.
Do they have roaming profiles? Have you excluded Temporary Internet
Files to roam with the profile? Users could be transferring tons of
cached information with every logon and logoff.

CPU utilization is high(70-90%) for the first one minute
and then it drops down to 30-40%. similarly, disk
subsystem usage is also high during the first one minute
and then it dops almost to zero. There is enough memory,
if fact all of the memory is not used. Network utilization
is well below 1-2%. Users have mandatory roaming profile,
the size of which is around 1 MB only. The issue exists
even if no roaming profile is set.

The same problem happens even when tested with local users
without any roaming profile.

Thanks

Mmm, difficult.
Have you checked in Task manager exactly which processes are
started upon logon? Something there must be the culprit. Do you
have an antivirus program running on the server? If so, does it
make a difference if you turn this off (just to test)?
Any other automatically started applications? Office FastFind?
Do these users have a lot of local printers that are autocreated
in their sessions?

All the processors are staring together. Turned off Trend
serverprotect and checked, it saves just 20 seconds.
Turned off Officescan on clients and checked, no
difference. Turned off handwriting and speech recognition
of office xp on the server. Only two autocreated printers.
Checked by disabling printer and drive mapping, no
difference.

Is it advisable to change the processor driver to MPS
multiprocessor PC?

Thanks

I've really no idea about the processor driver.
What I would probably do is to download FileMon and RegMon from
http://www.sysinternals.com/. Run them as administrator and start
a TS session as a normal user.

FileMon and RegMon will show you all files and registry keys that
are being accessed. Maybe that will give you an idea what is
taking so long.
