Slow log on

Hello!

On log-on explorer.exe will run with 20-80% processor time for about a
minute and end up at about 30-40MB memory usage.

I have a lot of software on the computer, but not a lot software in
regisry/...run keys.

Why does explorer.exe work like that slowing initial performance down?

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit
Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard drive and how much free space?

What is your CPU processor speed? Right click on your My
Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get
this information and the amount of RAM memory.

Another avenue of enquiry is the Event Viewer System log.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I have IBM laptop T30 with 1GB RAM, 40GB disk 15GB free and 2GHZ processor.
The event log does not show anything unusual. sigverif.exe reports OK. Device
manager is OK. I run Norton Antivirus 2005 and Windows Defender anti-spyware.

Is it reasonable that explorer.exe should take so much memory? (It seems to
be related to having many programs installed, not about free disc space.)

By running the software filemon from sysinternals I have discovered that
explorer.exe reads a lot of programs during log on. These programs are not
listed in the registry run keys or any startup showing in msconfig.exe. The
software that explorer reads are usual programs like nero.exe and so on.

This is not a virus problem. I wonder why explorer.exe does these things and
what triggers it to do it.

Take a look at your Folder options in Explorer. You will see under View tab
two advanced settings: "Automatically search for network folders and
Printers" & "Display file size inforamtion in folder tips" try turning these
off and see if Explorer behaves better.
