Slow linking/split database

Hallo,

Anybody advice on what could be wrong?

I have a split database with a back-end running on a W2000 server and
front-end localy with OfficeXP, Access file format 2002 on WinXP. Locally
the server is identified (map) as \\server\database(k. The linked table
manager shows k:\datatbase\backend_be.mdb.

The linking process takes a very long time and when accessing data in the
front-end after the linking the various forms open very slowly.

Any suggestion what is causing the problem?
