Slow keyboard response time

New Dell laptop; windows XP; 2 GB mem;McAfee AV;ZA Firewall.
When typing (or trying to!), what is displayed is frequently multiple
characters behind. Numerous calls to Dell's tech support - no joy.
Problem vanishes in safe mode. Clearly a service/driver or app is
grabbing cycles but can't detect the culprit using process explore,
task manager, etc. Any ideas where to start looking?

USB Keyboard connection to PC ? If so plug it into a different
socket ( Port ). Sounds like a saturated USB Root Hub. Heavy
loading on a hub can cause things like sluggish mouse movement
and keyboard response time to lag.
