Slow File Explorer in Large Folders

This is a very wierd problem that occurs when an XP Pro or Win 2000
machine tries to open up a folder that contains a lot of files. When
using File Explorer, our win98 achines immediately show the contents
of the folder. The XP and Win 2000 machines take over a minute to
open up the same folder. The "flashlight' appears and looks and looks
and looks and finally the contents of the folder are displayed. We
have 5000 to 15000 files in these folders. Is it possible that XP Pro
and Win2000 can not handle folders with a lot of files as well as
Win98??? Has anyone else had this problem. If so, is there a fix??

Hi, Charles!
Dispatch files into subfolders and/or archive old unused files in ZIP
files.

Unfortunately, all these files need to remain together for the
software application that uses them. Subdirectories are not an
option, nor is archiving the files since they are dental photographs
that we need to have access to on a daily basis.

Hi!
Then the only alternative is to upgrade hardware. You need a faster
CPU,faster graphics card, (more) fast memory, a faster HD (the new
10000 SATA HDs are out). A RAID configuration with 2 HDs would help too.

I had this same problem after I bought a new computer
last year. I thought it was a hard drive problem, but
discovered that it was a software glitch in Photoshop
6.0. I downloaded a fix for the program, and it
immediately and completely fixed the problem. I
understand this glitch was unique to XP, so you might
have a similar problem, if not with Photoshop, maybe
another program.
