Slow file access through Windows VPN

Hi:
I am a junior network guy in our company. We have a central office in
NJ with T1 and several branch offices with 768K SDSL within few
hundred miles range. In NJ, we setup a Windows 2003 VPN server using
PPTP. The VPN server is not part of domain. We also have a file
server in the same location. When clients established VPN connection
then they can access the files in the file server. The performance is
acceptable for accessing small files.

My question is when some of the clients are in Asian (Taiwan or
China), they can estaablish the VPN connection but complaint the
access speed if not acceptable. When they tried to open a 60k Word
file, it take few minutes compare to 10 second in US.

I am wondering if its normal.

I think you just answered your own question. If your clients access
files on the file server over the VPN and performance is acceptable
and there are no real differences between clients except location,
then the only variable seems to be the route the clients take to the
server.

Soooo, if clients in the US are fine and the Asian ones are slow
getting to the same types of files on the server, then it looks as if
the route they take is the culprit.
