Slow disc access

I have a Sony Vio system running Windows XP Home Edition
and have installed Office 97 from disc instead of using MS
Works. I am logged on as an Administrator and have created
two slave log-ins. Everything was OK for several months.
Then I noticed that when I am logged on and using Office,
access to the hard drive is very slow (15 secs to view
files) and the drop down menus in any Office application
can take 30 secs to become active when launched. However,
if either of the other two accounts log in without me then
their Office programmes run at normal speed. If I then log
on I appear to slow them down as well. If I log off the
problem disappears for them. I can only guess that as
Administrator I have somehow accrued an overhead of
processor time that slows down the use of Office. Any
ideas?
