upgrade to XP Pro, disable simple file sharing on all boxes, optimize your
protocol stack (if you have anything out of ordinary), and make sure the
firewall is allowing file and print sharing.

Immediately upon upgrade the browsing speed was almost instantaneous. The
forced guest authentication induces delay, as does not having port 135 open
by default. When you have XP Home, and a network setup correctly, the browse
speed from a Pro box to a Home box is about 20 seconds. Opening port 135
brings it down to about 5 seconds. Upgrading to Pro puts it under 1 second.
