Slow bringing up drop down boxes

When using the browse function in any program, when I click on the down
arrow, it takes about 30 - 60 seconds for the list to come up. Wne I stay in
that appliction, it works good. But if I exit out and go back into the same
one or a different one, it starts up again. Is there a fix for this?
 
If referring to MS Office applications and the File Open or Save As
dialog windows, then the solution is to open My Computer, R-click on any
"red X'ed" drives and select "Disconnect". This will prevent the program
from trying to read unavailable locations.
