slow boot up

My friend's Dell Demension 4550, running WinXP Home, without SP2, takes
about 5 minutes to boot/reboot. This started happening a few months ago.
We don't see anything new in Start UP that would cause this, no new
software, etc. We've run SpyBot, AdAware, and McAfee, but nothing's
turned up there. Any ideas?

Do regular maintance , Disk Cleanup and Defragmenting . Run only needed
items on startup ( McAfee running at startup may be the cause ) . JJ

Done all that.....but will try disabling McAfee and test. Start up has
minimal programs.

Clear the c:\windows\prefetch folder, that should help a little.
