Hello!
disable unnecessary application which you don't need but
still loads with windows start up.
To that :-
start>run>msconfig>startup > here you uncheck those
which you don't need eith start up.
Scan your system with latest virus definitioned antivirus
software/ spybot.
Chkdisk;disk defragment regularly.
There is an excellent tool ;called Bootvis.exe which
decreases booting time but it is unavailable right now.

By "the rest of the security updates", do you mean you included all the
critical updates as well? Be sure you have Q817287. This stops a memory
leak from a memory cache ('buffer overflow'). Or, is that the patch you
tried but failed?

If the malady occurred immediately after the updates, then it can be safely
assumed these are the culprit(s). Beside SP1a, there are, for me anyway ---
standalone home computer --- only 10 critical/security updates which are
absolutely essential. If this misbehaviour persists in spite of having
installed the aforementioned hotfix, it is not that unbearable to start
again; some of the patches are not designed to be removed. Returning to a
pre-SP1a system restore point, a repair install and, lastly, after having
saved all your important files and data, a clean install should be tried, in
this order of step. This is how I would tackle the issue.

Do some research. Turn to the Google achieves of the newsgroup,
"microsoft.public.windowsupdate", and look up posts, which appeared
frequently, listing good practices in deploying updates --- Sorry, I have
lost my file on the postings. In short, treat them as young seedlings, and
provide clean environs and soil condition for these to take root and grow.
Eh....I never bother to switch off my continuously running ZoneAlarm, but
that has never landed me in deed water, so far.

Hope this is of some help.
