Slow and Freezing System

I am running Std Office XP on Windows XP with Norton
Internet Security on a Compac 7500. I have more than 50%
free space available.

My system runs slow and often the applications freeze to
the point I sometimes can not get the Task Manager to
show up. I often find myself turning off the computer
using the button physically.

Can you please help me understand what is happening and
how I can resolve this problem?

Have you defrag the disk lately? How much memory do you have on your system?
