Slipstream WINXP SP-2 Installation Problems (Multiple)

Good Day/Evening;
I was able to get to past the pciide.sys file is corrupted problem as
instructed by the kb-314082 tech note and get into Recovery console. I
copied the following files:
ntoskrnl.ex_ to c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
user32.dl_ to c:\windows\system32\user32.dll
kernel32.dl_ to c:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll
THEN as instructed by the tech note above copied:
atapi.sy_ to c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys
intelide.sy_ to c:\windows\system32\drivers\intelide.sys
pciide.sy_ to c:\windows\system32\drivers\pciide.sys
HOWEVER: I got a 'File could not be copied' error message on:
pciidex.sy_ to c:\windows\system32\drivers\pciidex.sys
ALSO: On the my initial installation attempt from my slipstreamed XP Pro-SP2
CD I got the following errors that the file could not be copied on four files:
ntshared.chm
oembios.bin
pciidex.sys
packager.exe
I then attempted to copy the files above while still in Recovery Console and
got the error message "File could not be copied" after the "Overwrite file
(Yes, No, All)...

I modified the boot.ini to:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

And while still in Recovery Console was able to overwrite the existing
Boot.ini file.
I entered EXIT, and got the initial Windows Start Up Screen, then the system
hung again, blank screen, arrow pointer displayed and active.

There must be something wrong with my slipstream XP-SP2 CD that will not
recognize ntshared.chm, oembios.bin, pciidex.sys, and packager.exe and by
proceeding with the installation, I have screwed up the complete Win XP-PRO
SP2 install. Is my computer FUBAR?! I have been at it since Sep 15th, and
have some really great feed back from the Community, including how to create
a slipstream WinXP CD with SP-2, various technical links and finally
kb-314082 for the pciide.sys file is corrupted attempting to access my
Recovery Console.

Please tell me that there is a way to start anew without having to reformat
my entire partition and re-installing. I did back up key files on a 2Gb
Memory 'stick', But will lose Photoshop (my 15 year old son lost the
installation CD), and I need to get my laptop back up and running as I have
three clients I need to finish up ASAP.

Thanks in Advance;

I think you're going to find that reinstalling from scratch and taking an
hour or so plus reinstalling your apps is going to be far more efficient
than continuing to push your way thru a slipstream that doesn't work.
That's the problem with slipstreams: They are hard for the inexperienced
to test properly and only at disaster time do you discover it's not working
right.
You'll be much further ahead to invest in a drive imaging application for
$40 to $50 once you're up and running again. Then it's just a click and go
to put things back to where they were at the last backup time.
99% of slipstreams are defective for one reason or another and over 99%
of them never get tested until they're needed in a disaster.

Thanks Pop';
I would have to reformat my partition and would lose any back-ups that are
there if any, wouldn't I? And also, I cannot even get it to recognize my
original install disk, XP-Pro-SP-1 CD, it goes immediatly to the bad install
and hangs...
And what are drive imaging applications (?), wouldn't I have lost my
back-ups anyway?

Thanks for your response!

Do I run the drive imaging application first? Should I create a bootable CD
in order to run it? I did save some back-up files, but am not sure they will
work unless I was able to save my related registry information. Also, IF I
do have to reformat my partition, wouldn't the drive imaging application not
be applicable?

Hmm, OK, it looks like I might have gone over you head without meaning to;
sorry about that. Let's see if I can straighten it out a little:
Thanks Pop';
I would have to reformat my partition and would lose any back-ups
that are there if any, wouldn't I?

Yes: Specifically, you would lose ALL of the information in the
partition/s. No data would be left; no programs, nothing.

And also, I cannot even get it to
recognize my original install disk, XP-Pro-SP-1 CD, it goes
immediatly to the bad install and hangs...

It probably won't recognize your XP CD because the computer BIOS isn't set
to boot from the CD. Somewhere in your BIOS settings, you will find an
option for which drives the computer can boot from and the order it will
look at the drives in.
You want the computer to look for the CD first, and THEN the hard drive,
so set the CD drive to be the first boot device.

To get TO your BIOS settings, system settings, or whatever your computer
might call them, watch the screen closely as the computer starts up. There
should be a message appear, something to the efffect of "Press F2 to access
system settings" or "Press DEL to access BIOS settings", etc.. There are
several different possibilities depending on who made your BIOS, so watch
the screen for the message about which key to press.
That key press will ONLY work while the message is on the screen. Once
it goes away, you'll have to reboot and try again if it didn't "catch" for
you. So you might have to boot more than once if it goes by real quick on
the screen. Usually it's there for two or three seconds, though; watch
carefully for it.

Once you get into the BIOS, then look for things like Bootable Drives and
Boot Order. You need to set the CD to be bootable, and then the CD drive to
be the FIRST boot device with your hard drive second. Once you have that
setup, then you're ready to boot from the XP CD. Put the CD in the drive
and Restart your computer.
As it restarts, you'll see a message similar to "Press any key to boot
from CD ..." . Press a key or whatever it asks, and it will boot from the
CD. It'll take it awhile to get loaded up once it starts to boot from the
CD.

Then, you want to Delete the partition/s, and then Create the partition/s.
Before you delete the partitions, make a note of how many there are and so
forth if you wish to recreate the same thing again. Or, you could just put
everything on one partition, which is also easiest, and not a problem in any
way.
From there on, just follow the instructions on the screen; it'll walk you
through the whole process.
Do you have SP2 on a CD? If not, you might want to see if you can beg
borrow or steal a copy of it. SP2 has the firewall on it. Do NOT connect
your computer to the internet until you have a firewall set up and,
preferable, anti-virus software installed. Then once you're protected with
the XP basic firewall and antivirus, you can go online and let it start
downloading all the XP updates.

Here's some reading for you:

And what are drive imaging applications (?), wouldn't I have lost my
back-ups anyway?

Drive imaging is basically taking a "snapshot" of your hard drive at a
specific point in time. Then that "image" can be used to put everything
back the way it was if you ever have another crash, your hard drive goes
bad, whatever. Acronis True Image and Symantec's Norton Ghost are the two
best ones going. Ghost costs about $10 more last I knew, but IMO it's worth
it for the added bells & whistles. Neither is real expensive and both offer
free trials.

At this point, imaging software can really only benefit you in the future.
Keep those backup files you do have though; they might come in handy.
Without knowing how you created the backup files and with what, I can't say
too much about them.

Well, I took your advice and just reformated my HD in NTFS. Now I am getting
an error when I try to install my Win-XP Pro CD stating that NTLDR is
missing? I actually did back up most of my data files and one
back-up/restore, but I would like to get on with this, what to do about the
NTLDR error?

Thanks Pop'
