I want to slipstream my XP with SP2, however I only have a restore disk,
which is Nortons Ghost, from the manufacturer (eMachines). Is there anyway I
can do this without having the actual XP disk?
PS I called emachines and they only supply the restore disk.

No you need the original xp disk or a recovery disk with a copy of the
original xp directory. As far as i know slipstream does not work with a
ghosted image.

Search your drive for the presence of a i386 folder. If found you can
copy and slipstream it and then burn to CD-R disk. The disk won't
be bootable, but you can download and create the Floppy boot set
and once it completes it's 6-7 set swap, direct it to your i386 CD-R
to run XP setup. But OEM's typically modify standard XP setups,so
the content in their i386 folder won't match a retail disk.

I though I saw a link here showing how to integrate a service pack into
an existing installation. he would restore first and re ghost it after.

Forget the Ghost (or give it up) and go here where you'll find
everything you need:

It's a method of combining an original XP install CD and XP2, either the
file downloaded from the M$ site or their upgrade CD. The method combines
the two into a folder on your HD, and you'll then burn these files to a CD
to create your new bootable, slipstreamed install disk. At that point you
can reinstall XP using only one disk and have SP2 a part of the install.
Here's a good how-to link:

But what is Slipstreaming?

The word "slipstreaming" was originally used to refer to the
practice of many software manufacturers of including updates to
their product on the distribution CD without any real
announcemeent of what they were doing or differentiation of the
various kind of CDs. It was always a disparaging term because it
was poor practice. It was used as a way for the manufacturer not
to have to print a different box, manual, etc. for the updated
version, and to sell older stock that didn't appear to be
outdated, but actually was. That saved them money, but it left
the customer unable to tell whether he was buying the new version
or the old.

Somewhere along the line, people started creating their own
updated versions of some software, by merging the update files
with the original CD. Someone got the bright idea to call it by
the same name "slipstreaming," without realizing that the name
was originally used in a disparaging way.

The term stuck. I dislike the use of the word this way, but the
original meaning has been lost, so I long ago gave up trying to
fight it. Since everybody now uses it simply to mean a version
with the upgrade incorporated in it, I reluctantly go along.

So these days a slipstreamed copy of XP simply means an
installation CD that you've made yourself that incorporates an
upgrade, such as SP2.
