I've got windows xp running on 500hz,256mb ram, pentium 3 computer. I know
this isn't reaching the ideal system requirements. I will be upgrading in
the near future and don't want to format my hard drive. Xp runs and loads
up...but trying to load a program is asking too much. For some reason it
loads programs (wordperfect, quicken) after I came back from safe mode. Its
wierd. However, any other time it won't. Is there anyway that I can even
further "slim" down the essentials? So at least I can run programs...

You can open msconfig.exe from the Run command and then select which
programs start automatically from the Startup tab. Alternatively, some
people like StartupCPL, which adds a tool to control this which programs
start automatically to Control Panel:

Good luck,

If you turn off all of WinXP GUI eye-candy, it will still be very slow,
but it might usable for simple word processing, email, web-browsing,
etc. It won't be any good for graphics-intensive applications, and most
newer games. (During the public preview period, I tested WinXP on a 500
MHz machine with 256 Mb of RAM, and it was slower than I like.)

1) Right-click the Task Bar > Properties > Start Menu, ensure
"Classic Start menu" is selected.

2) Right-click an empty spot on the Desktop > Properties > Themes >
select "Windows Classic."

3) Right-click My Computer > Properties > Performance > Settings >
Visual Effects, ensure "Adjust for best performance" is selected.

P3-500? That's nothing.. i've had (and actually know people still
running it) XP loaded onto a p3-450, p2-350, p2-300 laptop, p-133
laptop, and even for fun I got it onto an old 6x86 120 MHz with only
64mb of RAM... and it ran decently on all those systems, even the
6x86.

Could you actually *do* anything with those installations? Color me
skeptical.
