Slightly OT: After AIW Install, DVD's Don't Play

B

BRH

I installed an X800XT AIW a few weeks ago. Because I've always played
DVD's on my PC using "PowerDVD" (Version 2.5), I didn't install the DVD
module of ATI's MMC software at the time (fearing a system conflict of
some sort).

Yesterday was the first time since the AIW installation that I tried
playing a DVD, and it didn't work. Here are the symptoms:

a) First of all, the DVD won't startup PowerDVD after it's inserted
into the drive. Instead, I get a listing of the files on the DVD.
b)When I start up PowerDVD manually, and try to play the DVD, I get a
pop-up windows that says "Copyright Announcement" saying that the disc
is copyrighted and won'y play in FILE mode.

I know that the disc is copyrighted - most feature films are. Note that
I'm trying to play the ORIGINAL DVD, not a copy. And the same DVD's
play fine in my living room DVD player. The problem is only with PowerDVD.

I figure that there must either be a Windows setting or a PowerDVD
setting that got hosed. BTW, I'm running WindowsXP Pro SP1.

Can anyone tell me how I get PowerDVD to work properly again? Or, short
of that, can I install ATI's DVD module separately (without doing the
entire AIW install over again) as a last resort? (I'd prefer to get
Power DVD working, though....)

Thanks!

Did you try reinstalling PowerDVD?

BTW, it's not needed for ATI MMC to work.

That's Windows default. PowerDVD needs to be associated with DVD discs.
Be sure to select browse if the choice for PowerDVD isn't listed and
make sure to tick "always open" or "always use" or whatever it's called
so that it associates DVDs with PowerDVD.

Also, untick and tick "Play Automatically Upon Inserting Disc" in the
PowerDVD configuration.

That normal, you are not suppose to play store bought DVD that way.

Instead, press "O' to opens a menu and select the correct *drive*.

You are trying to play the files, not the DVD. Big difference.

Nope, user error. :)

I would too, the ATI DVD player sucks compared to PowerDVD. In fact,
after installing the ATI player once and seeing how basic it was, I've
never re-installed it again after using the ATI un-installer.

Thanks for the help. I found the toggle for "File Mode" and "CD Mode".
For someone reason, it was incorrectly set to File Mode. It's working
again now. It had nothing to do with the AIW installation.

Thanks!

PowerDVD 2.5 is quite old. 6.0 is the latest release.

There is an upgrade patch 2.5 to 2.55. Might help.

Have you downloaded any Windows patches that might have changed your
DRM software? Possibly the AIW software that you did load has screwed
up your PowerDVD.
