Is There a Program to Extract Video Recorded From a Sony DVD-Recorder?

Got an AIW X800-XT a few weeks ago for the main purpose of
being able to record TV programs to the hard drive, and use
software like Pinnacle Studio 9 to "edit out commercials",
and add other elements like custom menus with chapter links,
etc. So far, so good.

However, before the AIW, I used a Sony external DVD recorder
to record TV shows to DVD, and to convert over 100 VHS tapes
from my VHS collection to DVD.

I'd like to be able to take those DVDs recorded by the Sony,
and somehow get them onto my hard drive, so I can use
programs like Pinnacle to create custom "commercial free" DVDs.

However, the files stored on the DVDs created by the Sony
DVD recorder are a bunch of .VOB files. For example, a
1-hour program will contain five 900 meg .VOB files and a
few .IFO and .BUP files. I can "play" the individual .VOB
files with MMC File Player program.

I can also PLAY the Sony-recorded DVDs on my PC, using
software "players" like PowerDVD.

But what I'd like is some software program that can READ or
RIP FROM these Sony-created DVDs (with the .VOB files) and
convert/copy them to .MPG, .AVI, or any format so I can use
Pinnacle or other software to create the custom DVDs.

Does anyone know of a product, or a method of getting the
programs recorded to DVD by the Sony recorder, onto the hard
drive, to accomplish the above stated objective?

Thanks for any help/advice.

Pinnacle Studio9+ has a
Import DVD Titles..............
function on the File menu. Couldn't find anything about it in the manual but
was able to convert .VOB files on a DVD I made with Studio8 into a MPG2 file
on my HDD.
I don't remember Studio8 having this function and don't know if other
versions of 9 or 10 have it.

Thanks for the tips. I have Studio 9.4.3 and noticed that
function as well. How did you do this? My Sony-recorded
DVDs have 4 or 5 .VOB files. Did you import and convert
each one individually? After that, is there a way to
combine them into a single file that you can then edit?

Did you get any noticeable "breaks" in the video between the
various .VOB files?

I also thought about "playing" the Sony-recorded DVDs in an
external DVD player, and using an S-Video cable from the
player to the AIW's video-IN port, to CAPTURE the video
using MMC, like capturing TV or VCR. But this would take up
to an hour per disc, and I've got nearly 100. Not sure if
this would even work and if so, if there's some way to speed
up the process.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond. Appreciate your
advice. And I'll continue playing around with it.

I haven't been using 9+ very long. Just tried the function to make sure
that's what it does. I checked the file in the menu it brought up, their was
only one, and it put an MPG 2 file on my HDD. Like I would have had if had
originally rendered it to a file instead of disc. Seemed ok. Afterwards I
noticed one of the files on the DVD wasn't working correctly at least with
the ATI DVD Player so wouldn't be able to tell for sure if every thing is ok
with the file on the HDD.
I would only recapture the files as a last resort. You'll lose quality. If 9
doesn't work post in alt.video.DVD.software other programs are available
that should be able to do it.
Good luck.
