slightly OT: 600 vs. 1200 dpi

My HP4100 printer (which I use with WinXP computers) claims to print at 1200
dpi. I've been looking at a new all-in-one of another brand that mentions
1200 x 600 dpi. Is it likely that the old printer is printing at 1200 x 1200
dpi? (Is that what the single 1200 means?)

Thank you!

Read here about a third of the way down:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...=en_US&prodSeriesId=83436&prodTypeId=18972#A3

Resolution HP FastRes 1200 ** (1200 dpi quality) at engine speed

HP ProRes 1200 (1200 x 1200 dpi) at 25 ppm

Economode for improved print quality over regular dpi selections

600 x 600 dpi at engine speed

** Default setting

Don't know how well the paste will come out, but yes, 1200 dpi means
(1200x1200 dpi) for the 4100.

Unless you are doing studio-quality photos or require extremely sharp
graphics or large print, the (usually) default 600 x 600 is just fine for
normal, everyday office or home printing. For plain text documents, even
less than that is fine and saves ink/toner.

Thank you, Tom! I'll have see which I'm using on my HP4100. I was curious
about dpi when I noticed that a new, expensive machine would have lower
resolution.
