Slide number not visible when using .pot file

I have a .ppt file with master slides that work the way I want them to. The
file contains only master slides -- no presentation slides at all. If I copy
this file and then start creating slides, everything works as expected.

If I save the .ppt file as a .pot file and then create a new presentation using
the .pot file as the design template, the slide number part of the footer shows
up on neither title page nor body pages. The slide number part of the footer is
present on both title and body master pages and is turned on there (i.e., it's
checked in the Master Layout dialog).

To get the slide number part of the footer to appear in a presentation based on
the .pot file, I have to go to the View>Header and Footer... dialog and check
Slide Number. But this is already checked in the .pot file.

Does anybody have any idea why PPT isn't recognizing the visibility of the slide
number part of the footer when I use a .pot file to create a new presentation?

I'm using Office XP (2002).

Thanks,

Scott

Evidently the Show Footer attribute is not passed by the template. To work
around, save your file as a PPT and set the WINDOWS attribute to Read Only.
Your clients can open the file and edit it, but will be prompted to save it
with a new name. Not as elegant, but same functionality. Your template is
preserved and your clients can create presentations from the template with
their own file names.

Thanks for the workaround suggestion. Any idea why the "show date" setting
isn't being propagated from the .pot file to the .ppt files based on it?

To hazard a guess: Templates files are used for Designs as opposed to
functions...

You can pass this along as a suggestion to Microsoft via this forum by
