Slave HDD

CPU: Pentium4 1,7GHz
HDD: 40GB
RAM: 256MB DDR

I just installed an additional 20GB Segagate HDD 5400RPM as a slave, but
when I turn on my PC, it freezes before I type in my password to login.
Freezes even in the BIOS. I changed the jumper from Cable select to Slave on
the slave but the same result. The slave was formatted, and the problem start
happening after.
I had copied my important files on that slave and deleted them of my master
drive. But I cannot access to the slave to back them up. What can I do.
Reformatting the slave is not an option as you can see. I need help!!!

If one drive is jumpered as a slave, the other (on the same cable) must be
jumpered as a master. Did you do this?

It is important to not only have the jumpers correct, but also the
location. You need the Master to be the one on the end of the IDE Cable
and the Slave to be in the middle. If the computer functions properly
with only the master, but for some reason the slave crashes the whole
thing, try the secondary IDE Controller for the slave and see if that
helps. If the drive freezes everything up no matter where you put it,
it may be either a fualty drive or your motherboard has issues.

You may want to try updating the BIOS if possible as that can often
solve issues of not recognizing a hard drive

no I did'nt check that, I'll check it, but I have another question. What
about if the slave was set to as a cable select?

If one drive is set as cable select, the other MUST be set the same.

Is the Master drive a WD drive? If so, you may have to change the jumper on
it for the slave to work. WD drives have a jumper for single drive (Master)
or dual drives (Master) with another drive.

thanks, the slave is connected to the middle of the IDE cable, I tried both
slave and cable select options on the slave. Both the same result. I forgot
to mention that I'd had another slave (2GB) with slave jumper setting and it
was working fine on the same IDE cable (in the middle of it). That leads me
to think that Motherboard and the cable are ok. But I'm not sure, if faulty
HDD (slave) cause the problem?. Upgrading the BIOS? I've never tried that
before. I'll try it, if that helps. I'm really afraid to lose my files that
