I intend to use Skype for intercontinental telephone calls to my relatives
and friends
Questions:
1- Is Skype Vista compatible, as I do not find anything on their website
about this.
2- What is a good quality webcamera. I have tried a Logitech QuickCam
Fusion, which according to the info on the box is Vista certified, but after
installing the software and connecting the camera, a message popped up
indicating that the drivers on the installation CD, were for Windows
95....The Logitech website does not provide a driver update, and the
helpdesk referred me to the FAQ.
Appreciate your help

You must have missed the correct drivers web page at Logitech because the
Vista drivers for the Quickcam Fusion are the default download on Logitech's
drivers page..

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/435/278&cl=us,en

Hopefully that link takes you directly to the right page.

As far as Skype I used it only once a couple of days ago and the results
were less than impressive. Lots of interruptions, choppy sound in both
directions, poor volume levels and background noise. IMO it is not quite
Vista ready, unless that was typical of their service quality.

From the Skype website:

a.. System requirements
a.. PC running Windows 2000, XP or Vista. (Windows 2000 users require
DirectX 9.0 for video calls).

I use Skype with a Logitech QuickCam Fusion on my Vista machine, works
without any problems. The Vista drivers for the webcam are on Logitech's
website.

Occasionaly the quality on Skype isn't too great. I have found hanging up
and recalling the person often fixes the problem.

It's nothing to do with Vista compatibility. It was the network conditions.
I have been using Skype with Vista since summer 2006, and it has been
working perfectly, most days with a business associate in San Francisco (I'm
in London). But the last few months I have not used Skype much at all until
about three weeks ago, when I was using it a lot to talk to my father, who
has been business travelling in China. We would often get a very bad
connection. It is possible that call quality has recently been bad on
Skype, in general.

Hopefully it was just a temporary glitch then. I had to disconnect and
reconnect 4 times during a conversation to get the audio back to something
recognisable.

Funny, I could have sworn that Vista logo wasn't there when I downloaded the
program last week. :)

i use skype nearly everyday.. i videoconference with people in poland,
brazil and china...
on xp it worked pretty well with a logitech STX, but with vista it has
been very spotty.

i have to shut down nearly everything else or it will take forever to
start up video.
even trying to open internet explorer or Word, will take about a
minute...

the video, which was decent, now lags by 3-5 seconds and constantly
distintegrates into choppy pixel blocks.
Audio snags and repeats.. and this is all if i have everything else
shut down.

even trying to type is nearly impossible, with the letters stopping to
catch up and lagging sometimes 5-10 seconds behind.

sending a file while you vidconference? wouldn't even try it now. and
that was one of the reasons i had the program....

my computer is older, but it still has 2 gigs ram, a 512 meg video
card, and dual 1.8Ghz athlon processors...
i would never have suspected vista would be this bad, but it's awful.

i'm saving my pennies to rebuild the computer and hopefully the
performance returns to at least what i had with XP

one other thing i should add is that teh quality nearly always gets
better the longer i talk....
not sure if vista learns to allocate resources to it, or what the case
may be, but if i talk for 5 minutes, there will be nothing but
problems, but if i stay on for an hour, things generally clear up. the
video and audio are still not close to as good as they were under XP,
but they get better.

maybe my expectations are so far down for vista right now that ANY
little thing seems better, but i thought it worth the time to mention
the length factor.
