Do you mean like yahoo messenger.

Yes, but Yahoo messenger cannot call other people on Skype (cant it?).

I have used skype v 1.0.0.106 in 98SE since its introduction. It
works well for skype<->skype calls and for outgoing prepaid L/D calls
but it does not support incoming calls, voice mail, or the newer
features such as plugins, etc. Dunno, but you may find it here:

I attempted unsuccessfully to upgrade to the next version after
1.0... but, although it worked, it left video artifacts on the screen.
That phenomenon may have been local but I have no interest in sorting it
out and have tried no later versions of Skype.

Thanks for letting me know that. I'm tempted to try it for the sake
of the additional functions -- I'd like to have a couple of incoming
phone numbers that are local to my correspondents -- but I'm not real
cool with the fact the "new" versions keep copies of users' contact
lists in a central database. Ostensively, the purpose is to allow
portability: It gives users access to their contacts lists from *any*
computer running the Skype software. That's a nice touch but is a bit
"Big Brother-ish" to suit me. OTOH, I never discuss State secrets, plan
bombing runs, discuss serious business/personal matters on the medium,
anyway ;-).
