Sandman112 helped on this but, I'm afraid I think I need some more help.
When I typed in control userpasswords
and on the next screen I unchecked the checkbox for "Users must enter a user
name and password to use the computer" and restart the computer, windows
loaded skipping the login screen but I found an unknown desktop, SP2 asking
me my configuration preferences and my outlook is installed but not
configured etc. What am I missing?

Did you select the account you wish to make the primary logon?

.. Go to the Start Menu and the Run box.
.. Type in the following:
control userpasswords2
.. now click OK
.. In the new Windows that appears select the account you wish to make the primary
logon.
.. Now uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password..." box.
.. Hit Apply and a dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the selected users
password.

Click OK.
The changes will work the next time you restart your computer.

How to Enable Automatic Logon in Windows

I also have a related problem. I was using WIN2K and was the only user so
when I installed the WIN2K I had it go into my user straight from bootup.
When I upgraded to XP Pro and tried to set it up for multiple users it still
goes straight into my user account at boot up. Will your instruction work
in this case?

Owen in your case you must check the box that
"Users must enter a username and password..."

Hope this assists
