Single doc interface

Every time i click on a spreadsheet it opens it as an MDI child
window. I prefer having it open as a new exel session. I can only do
this if i first click the excel icon and then open the file. Is there
a way to turn off the auto MDI feature?
 
If you're using xl2k or higher, you could toggle this setting:

Tools|Options|View|Windows in taskbar (check it)

This doesn't actually open a new instance of excel for each workbook/window, it
just shows it in the taskbar that way.

If you're using xl97, then this SDI isn't supported. (time for an upgrade???)

You could start additional instances of excel (like you write), but I like to
keep just one instance running. I think it makes sharing between workbooks
easier.

ctrl-tab
or
ctrl-f6

is a quick way to toggle between workbooks.
