single-click double-click XP registry problem

When I single-click on anything, it performs a double-click. I don't want it
to do this.
I found under My Computer / Tools / Folder Options / General where I can
manually set this on or off. It wasn't set to Single Click, although it was
behaving in this manner anyway (for all folders, files, URLs, etc.). I tried
setting it to Single Click and Applying and then setting it back to Double
Click and Applying. However, it still behaves in Single Click mode no matter
what.
Changing the speed of clicking in the Mouse Control Panel makes no difference.
There seems to be a registry setting somehere that is permanently set to
make single-clicking perform double-clicking, but I don't know where it is.
Does anyone in the forum know where in the registry this setting is?

Hi Joe,

The item you were looking at under Folder Options makes all your items
work as web links, which require one click.

What type of mouse? It sounds like your mouse software driver is
configured for the double click. Here are some t-shooting tips:

Did you try another mouse? If it always double clicks with
another mouse, then it is a software issue, OS or driver. If it
doesn't, then the mouse button is faulty. The microswitches
can develop major contact bounce, which will be interpreted
as a double click. If you don't have access to another mouse,
re-assign the the left and right buttons to swap their functions,
and determine if it is a software or hardware problem.
