When I run a query, the "apply a filter" button is greyed
out. Why is that? I want to filter by department.
Fields are EmployeeName, Department, Course.

I am running Access 2002 on XP.

You can't apply a filter if it doesn't yet exist. While the query is open in
datasheet view, you can go to "Records, Filter, Advanced Filter/Sort..." and
define a filter, then, while your filter definition is still open, click on the
"Apply Filter" button. Save the query to make the filter permanent.

THANK YOU, Bruce! As you can well tell, I'm still
learning Access and have a LONG road ahead.
