Simple question on downloading

Why is it that Vista Home Premium takes forever to copy a file into your
computer after downloading it ? For example... I download a 100 mb file from
the internet on my Roadrunner cable and then, it takes seemingly forever for
it to copy to the place on my computer that i have downloaded it to. This
adds more time to the download than what I was seeing when I was using
Windows XP. Is there any setting that can be changed in Vista to alleviate
this copying time ?

Something is unclear here. A file is copied to the hard drive as it's
downloaded.

Before you click OK for the download, choose the directory (folder)
where you want it to end up.

Or have I misunderstood your process?

I am doing all that. I select the place that I want to download to and
the download completes. THEN...the file gets copied to the destination that
I have selected. A second box opens up with the copy process being
illustrated by a progress bar. And that is what takes all the time. This is
very strange.

Depends on the software you use to do the download. If you use I.E.
then the file is first stored in your I.E. temporary internet files
directory (like everything else) and then copied to the directory
where you really want it to be. The problem may be that the place
you specified is on a different drive than your own home directory,
and so any large file takes a long time to copy over.

If you specify a download directory on the same drive as your home
directory (normally on C then the 'copy' is really just making
another entry in the target directory-file instead of physically
copying all those many megabytes to another file-system. (Well,
that's how it works in Unix, anyway.)

Well the directory that I am downloading to is on the C Drive and that is
my home drive. It does not matter where in the C Drive I save a file to,
there is always a period of time that the file gets copied. With XP MCE I
used to get this test file in 43 seconds at a 10 mb/sec speed cap. Now with
Vista and new speed cap at 15 mb/sec (RR Premium) it takes me 53 seconds to
get the same file... even though I am downloading at 1.55 mb/sec average
speed or more.

Actually files are first copied to a temp folder, then moved to the
actual folder you specify. That's why you see the download complete,
then you see a "copying" message and a new progress bar. How long it
takes is proportional to the size of the file. It shouldn't take more
than about 10 seconds or so per GB.

All I know Adam is that the whole download process is much slower in
Vista than it was in XP. And this is something that I am going to place in
my dislike column in regard to the operating system.

Curious, I came across this article the other day:

If you want to play around some see if you can find something called
TweakMaster from Hagel technologies. I haven't used it but a couple
people I know swear by it. Its a utility that tweaks some internal
Windows settings like packet size if I remember correctly. It could
make a improvement in your overall download speed, then again could
make it slower. So if you try let us know and set a restore point
first just in case. ;-)

What happens is, that when you download, the file is written to a
temp. file. When the download is complete, the file get copied from
the temp. location to the destination you selected.

As for the speed issue, it could be your virus scanner.
If you trust the contents, try disabling the virus scanner temporally,
and compare the speed.

The download speed while downloading the file itself is very good. It is
just the copying process that takes time.
