bassbag

Im looking for a simple picture viewer that will view most pic types e.g
jpeg ,bmp ,gifs etc ...that will auto size pictures to the window (i dont
want to scroll to see all the pic or have to resize to see it all)and that i
can file associate with , so it will auto open if i click on a jpeg etc.It
doesnt have to have any other capability,in fact the smaller and less
options the better.

Well small and fast abd with all you require is Irfanview from
www.irfanview.com
Even though it has lots of other features, they're not visual in your way.

The best by far is free: Irfanview

Google is your friend...
I tried irfanview a while back but i dont need all the bells and whistles
just a simple viewer.i already have thumbsplus and photodeluxe to alter pic
etc.I just want a viewer that opens a pic and autosizes so its all shown in
the window ,and that will associate itself to pic files ..nothing else.

"The installation of TrackerV3 totals to about 1.4 MB. No further files are
added anywhere to your system, and nothing will be put into the registry but
uninstall information."

If that's small enough for you, you should try TrackerV3's image preview
because it's as simple as can be, have a look:

I know exactly what you mean. Who wants to scroll to view pictures, and who
wants small pictures blown up to fill the screen and become pixelated?

4 programs I have found that views pictures that way by default are
FireGraphic, (big) Cam2PC, (big) ACDSee (Shareware) and Imaginate.

Imaginate is a 1 File Wonder (single stand-alone executable). You can just
plop it on a floppy or CD with your pictures. You can associate it with all
your photos, click the files, and toggle through with the space bar.

Try Imaginate! http://www.geocities.com/thexagon/

PS: FireGraphic can be a 1 FIle Wonder too, but is a tad big at 3MB.

Allthough it looks nice and is nice , the downside is it doesn't support
gif (or ico) files. IMHO this is no match for Irfanview.

I would suggest Stormview 1.03, which is a very small one filer, but I
have never yet got it to successfully file associate- you can click on a
picture file and it opens Stormview, but you still have to drag and drop
the picture into the program window.

If anyone can suggest a workaround, I'd be happy to see it!

Don't know much about win2k and XP, but in win98SE, you can SHIFT-
rightclick a file, which adds 'open with' to the context menu. Click that
and check the 'always open etc' at the bottom and pick the exe you want to
open it with. (when it's stand-alone, you might have to 'browse'for it.

I tried irfanview a while back but i dont need all the bells and whistles

So don't use them. I just use it as a viewer and have other software
for editing etc.

Setting up the file association isn't the problem- it's actually getting
StormView to show the picture file after it opens itself. Ideally
Stormview would open showing the picture you have clicked on, but all it
does is show a blank window.

That's another good reason to go for irfanview.

Widya, I looked it over. I was able to duplicate what you describe, by
taking the %1 out of the reg command entry. In other words, you need to
be sure you have that in there...

<path>\StormView.exe %1

I don't know what you use for context menu editing. Windows Filetypes
dialog, or a standalone context menu editor, so I'll just type the
summary of the task here. Use one of those interfaces, to get to each
of the applicable image filetypes. Find the lines for the Stormview
command. Type that %1 in there.*

I'll be curious to know if this is the nature of the problem you're seeing,
the %1 being absent. It was the only thing I could come up with...

_________
(Btw, it's a good general habit to put the "%1" in quotes, to cover cases
of certain programs that need to be talked to that way. But either way
works for Stormview.)

I have always thought that the reason to put the parameter in quotes was to
handle file names or path names that have imbedded spaces (like "Program
Files" and the like). I think that many programs use a command line parser
that treats things in quotes as 1 item rather than 2 or more (separated by
spaces for example).

Any suggestions for a particular editor I could try? There's the
<shift>+<right mouse click> method, which doesn't allow you to type any
extra information. I also tried the "Associate with" command that comes
with Window Commander (shareware).

I think I tried that one time with Windows Commander but it didn't work,
so I gave up on that- I wouldn't mind trying again, I could have made a
mistake.

As always,
