A friend asked me if there was any software I could suggest to get some
decent quality audio capture on his laptop. This is just some speaking that
they are currently recording with a tape recorder. Sessions are usually
around 45 minutes but can vary a fair bit.

Other than using a decent quality microphone, is there any software that
would be good for capturing and compressing audio? Any hardware tricks to
get a clean capture?

Thanks!

Goldwave, http://www.goldwave.com, is a nice program once you figure it
out (must read, understand, and follow the instructions) I think that
lame is required for mp3.
