Silverlight?

Running Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

Just received an update notice for something called
"Silverlight". It is optional, not recommended. A Google
search provides plenty of gooblegoop about enhanced
interface and interactive experiences - but nothing that I
can really understand very well. Can anyone here describe,
in terms a low-tech user might understand (in contrast to
someone who is going to write software or prepare ads on
websites) just what benefits an average user (email, web
browsing) might get from downloading this item?

Many thanks.

On the Bridge!

almost no sites (but the microsoft ones) use this yet...

Its just another try-to-catch-up thing from Microsoft.. trying to make
something equivlent to flash technology.

Whenever you visit some of the microsoft sites you get an annoying pop up
prompting you to install this.

I have done so in the past.. but really its usless still..... I avoid
installing it.

There's no point in installing it until you want to use a website that uses
it. I have not found any that use it do far - not even Windows Live
SkyDrive.

some microsoft sites use it (that usually have help and information)

also I am sure they will "push it" with ie8

they want it to become a standard that lots of people will use...

Are you aware of Flash? Places like Youtube make use of flash. Well
Silverlight is Microsoft's "answer" (and challenge) to flash. It's just
another way that Microsoft is trying to get more control of the web. Flash
has become somewhat of a standard on the web (an annoying standard) and
Microsoft has recently tried to take away Adobe's dominance in this area
with the introduction of Silverlight. You'll find very few websites using
Silverlight as it is too new and may never take off as Microsoft hopes. The
jury is still out on this and will be for quite some time.

Cheers.

You may well be right, but the pages, side by side in both are the same.
Maybe not being available in either.

It's Microsoft's competition for Macromedia's Flash. You get prompted
to download it anytime you visit a Microsoft web page. I don't know of
any other pages that use it.
