signature for xp upgrade is invalid

Had problems with original xp professional. Reloaded
using recommended upgrade. While running message came up
saying:

signature for xp upgrade is invalid
error code is fffffdda
failed to install product catalogs

rebooted several times and went back to screen showing
reloading software. then the screen goes blank.

what is happening? Was my harddrive wiped out? If so,
can it be restored by computor tech?
