Sidewinder Precision 2 Joystick and XP

I cannot get my Sidewinder Precision 2 joystick to
function with XP. It worked fine on Windows 98. I get an
error message about drivers, but I can't find anything
about this on Microsoft's web-site. Can anyone help?

If it's a gameport controller joystick, simply connect it to the gameport
controller, go to the Control Panel, click on Game Controllers, use the
AutoDetect feature and XP will install its built in drivers.

Does that apply to the Sidewinder Precision Pro? I had
operated from a game port on my old computer sound card
so used the 9 pin plug. I found in my bag of unused plugs
and cables a USB to 9 pin that I am almost sure came with
the sidewinder. Can't find any documentation on it here
or on the internet. Am I correct and if so would like to
try it on a USB port since I don't have a game port on
this new computer.

Most of the USB adapters won't work as the actual joystick does not have the
correct data encoded in it to tell the USB port exactly what is it that is
connecting to it.
