Sidewinder Force Feedback Steering Wheel

I purchased the Sidewinder Force Feedback Steering Wheel
for my old system 2 years ago which supported Windows 98.
I just purchased a new Dell which supports Windows XP.
I tried to install the software for the wheel on my new
Dell when I found out the wheel didn't support XP, only Windows 98..
It said it may be installed, but may not function properly and may
damage the software. Anyone ever tried this?

If not possible, are their any wheels out there that
support Windows XP?

Thanks.

Hi Twodogs,

Sure there are wheels out there with 4.0 Microsoft software,
or which state they're for Windows XP on the retail box.

If you want to install your existing wheel however...
Here's the instructions for both the USB and the Gameport models:

The version 4 software for USB Sidewinders is XP compatible, of
course, you have to be using an administrators account to install it.
If it gives you a warning, you can click OK and continue installing it.
I've had the same experiences with USB cam's & other devices. ;-)

The version 3 software, isn't compatible. It uses XP's drivers instead.
USB devices just plug and play. GamePort devices need some work:

To install a GamePort controller, Plug it in, click Start / Control Panel /
Switch to Classic view if you haven't already / click Game Controllers
Click Add... / Select Microsoft Sidewinder Auto Detect / OK / OK.

I'm amazed at how many times you've posted this reply this week, seems people can't be bothered to search before they post.

We've been posting it in numerous newgroups since XP was released. Believe
me, there are very few unique and new problems... we just say the same thing
over and over again, day after day after day!

Some just don't know that the ability exists either.
It takes all kinds of users to make a Usenet. :)

Cheers,
Jimmy.

It is mainly the people who don't even know how to set up Outlook Express
for a newsgroup, and are using the confusing web-based interface. It is so
simple to subscribe to msnews.microsoft.com as the news server and receive
all the Microsoft newsgroups, do filtering, tracking of your own posts,
etc., etc., with a much better search than the web provides. And it is free
to anyone in the world, no logon, no password, despite the Internet Service
Provider.
