Using XP Home Addition.I was told if you have running programs at start up
that is why it takes a long time to do anything. How do I shut off the
programs that are running at start up that I do not use. Any help would be
appreciated

To disable any programs from starting when you turn on your computer, go to
Start >> Run >> type "msconfig" and click OK. Use the "Services" and
"Startup" tabs and uncheck any components that you do not want to load. This
will allow the PC to start faster.

Many programs give you the option of starting up with windows, but the
default is usually 'yes'. Look in the options or preferences for the
programs to disable automatic startup.

Thanks for the quick responce. Now the question is will I know what things to
stop loading? I don't want to stop something that will affect the programs
that are suppose to be running inorder to work correctly. Thanx again for the
quickness.

Disabling some, or all, of these will not create problems. Programs that are
required for the computer to function properly are not listed in the Startup
tab. However, some important Microsoft components are listed in the Services
tab. I would recommend checking the "Hide all Microsoft Services" box before
going through that list. Disable any programs that you know start up when you
turn on the computer. For example, I use McAfee Security. Since I do not want
that disabled, I enable the checkboxes that say anything about McAfee under
the "Command" column. The Command column will give you an idea of which
program you are disabling. To view the entire Command column, click and drag
the divider to the right. Hope this answers your question.
