shutting down

Occasionally when I shut down the computer, there will be a message that a
program is not responding and gives me the option to "end now". I always
choose "end now". The problem is that I have often gone to bed during the
shutdown process and don't find out that my computer was on all night until
I go to turn it on the next day. Is there a way to bypass this part of the
shutdown sequence so that when I want to turn off the computer I can be
assurred that it will indeed shut down (without me having to sit there and
wait)?

Thanks

It could be one of fifty different things. By that I mean it's on all
day and used by five people. This happens only a few times a year, so
it's no big deal, except like this morning when I realized it never
shut down from last night.

The problem isn't the offending program, as this could be a different
one at various times. I'm asking if there is a script or a setting that
automatically chooses "end now" and allows the computer to shut down
normally instead of a dialog box opening and asking me if I indeed do
want to "end now".
