My computer disconnects itself from the internet and
shuts down after being idle for an amount of time. How
can I stop it from doing this?

there r several different reasons this can happen. First
If u have a laptop computer the computer will shutdown
when it becomes hot. If it is a desktop computer, most
likely it is a settings problem for xp u can right click
somewhere on ure desktop choose properties goto the
screen saver tab look at the bottom of the window where
it says monitor power click the power button and another
window will popup under power schemes advanced and
hibernation choose settings that will not shutdown ure
computer. I hope this helps.

Control Panel - Internet Options - Connections page. Highlight the
connection used and click Settings, then Advanced and uncheck the
'Disconnect if idle'.

Note that your ISP may disconnect you if the connection is found to be
sitting doing nothing for (typically) 15 minutes or so
