Shutting down

My PC has developed a habit of running for a while, sometimes an hour
or so, then switching off instantly. If I press the on button the light
will flash but nothing springs into life.
I have taken off the processor fan and cleaned the matrix also. I've
had the power supply to pieces and spiring cleaned that. One symptom
that may point to something(?) is that if I pull out the power lead and
reconnect after an hour or so the computer will restart. If I leave the
lead in then it won't start at all.

Does this point to a power supply problem? Any advice will be greatly
appreciated.

Steve

If the CPU fan is working OK then yes I would say so, also make sure to
update your BIOS.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The CPU fan is gusting well. My
knowledge falls down at talk of the bios. What would I need to do to
update it?

Cheers

You are lucky that you *didn't* know anything about updating the BIOS
because that was *terrible* advice. From your description of the symptoms,
you have some hardware failure. I would start with swapping out the power
supply for a known-working one.

Here are general hardware troubleshooting steps:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with
known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA). Have all
your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

OK. Thanks for that. I'm off to buy a new PSU tomorrow. I'll open the
box carefully in case it needs to go back to the shop.

Hello Steve,

I want to apologise for the atitute of the other poster (Malke), I have no
idea as to why he feels that my suggestion was no good, you get this from
time to time.

If you bought a Dell/IBM/Gateway PC you can obtain a current version of your
BIOS from the manufacture, if it is not a brand name PC you will have to find
out what motherboard you have and go to it's support site and download the
appropriate file.

How can I find my motherboard model?

Download this utility it's free,

As to swapping out part on a system yes this is a way to trouble shoot, but
before you start going out and dishing out cash, update your BIOS.

Cheers back @ U...........
