Shutting down

My computer seems to work fine, except when I shut it down. It goes through
all of the normal actions but freezes just short of actually turning off. I
can manually shut it off and it starts up just fine, or I can push the
restart button and things work normally also.
Any suggestions?

At shutdown, XP has to close running applications, stop services and
write out the users' profile hive to disk. Sometimes the system will have
to allow a "Time-Out" to happen before it continues the process. You
could check the System Event Log for errors. However, Microsoft has
released an add-on Service, "User Profile Hive Cleanup" that helps the
PC to correctly shutdown. I would download/install it first and see if
the issue gets resolved - if not you would need to investigate further to
see what is causing the issue(s).
The add-on service is available from here:
