shutting down my pc

I'm running xp and most every time I try to shut down my
pc, it says that the program is not responding. I wind
up just pushing the button. I would appreciate any help.

Try this...

Start/Run. Type sfc /scannow and hit return. This should repair your system
files, which, I guess, is where the problem lies. Note: There is a single
space before /scannow.

You will have to trace and identify the application causing the shutdown to
hang.
You can use msconfig, Start\Run and enter msconfig, to disable items or
groups of items and test.
