shutting down & black screen

The other day I was running a program off of a USB. the program wasn't
responding and froze so i had to pull out the USB before ejecting the USB
properly and safely. after this, my key pad on my Acer notebook froze. I
pressed the power button to shut down the notebook. When i came back to it,
a message came up saying that I hadn't properly shut down the computer and
then it reloaded to the desktop. my keypad was still frozen. Now when I
turn on my computer, it comes on but there is only a black screen. The
computer is running but i can't get to anything. it no longer restarts to my
log in page or to my desktop and home. I have no idea what to do. Can
anyone please help me?

One wonders what steps you took between "my keypad was still frozen" and
"now...there is only a black screen."

Reboot pressing F8 continuously after the first boot screen to take you a
screen where you choose safe mode. Then do a system restore to a time
before your USB (drive?) issue.
