While working on something else, I came across this file on my PC:
"c:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log "dated today and it's a 2mb file so it got
my attention. I opened it - it goes back a 14 months - scrolled down and
see daily entries like this

2007-05-12 01:49:42 412 1b4 Misc = Process: C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
2007-05-12 01:49:42 412 1b4 Misc = Module:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
2007-05-12 01:49:42 412 1b4 Shutdwn Install at shutdown: no updates to
install
2007-05-12 01:49:42 412 1b4 Shutdwn FATAL: WUCheckForUpdatesAtShutdown
failed, hr=8024A000

I do NOT have windowsupdate turned on and DO use a firewall, so it looks
as if it tried to update - and failed. I checked google and lots of
others have noticed it too.
(see same issue )
http://www.outpostfirewall.com/foru...ec7463682eeb1f608edf6d83f3764d&t=20356&page=2
I read thru Google matches and no one seems to know WHY it''s trying to
update when Autoupdate is OFF. I tried renaming - just to check and
sure ' nuf, it is " Currently in use" so I can't do that.
Anyone already been thru this and have the answer? Is there a service
I should turn off ?
Thanks

c:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log whether the Automatic Updates service is turned
on or not, the log gets written to. I just clean it out every once in a
while.

Shutdwn FATAL: WUAutoUpdateAtShutdown failed, hr=8024000C I assume that
means that Windows Update Auto Update At Shutdown could not run and failed.

wuauserv is the Automatic Updates service. wuauserv.dll is the ServiceDll.
As far as I know wuauserv.dll locks the WindowsUpdate.log or has it in use.

Disable and stop the Automatic Updates service. The WindowsUpdate.log will
still get written to with the WUAutoUpdateAtShutdown failed stuff.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Automatic Updates |
Set the startup type to Disabled | Click Apply |
Click the Stop button | When the service stops, click OK |
Close Services

I thought turning feature off in - System- Autoupdate tab did that for
me. I did what you said - that worked fine - file no longer locked - I
renamed file to .txt: all set.

Thanks

Is Windows Defender installed?
No

Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update?
( I don't have autoupdate on)
Haven't done it in maybe a month so nothing serious missed.

Keep in mind that the next time that you enable the Automatic Updates
service and visit Windows Updates, WindowsUpdate.log will probably get
recreated.

Windows Update will not work with Automatic Updates service and the BITS
service disabled.

I keep those two services disabled except on update Tuesdays. I leave Turn
off Automatic Updates selected on System Properties\Automatic Updates tab
always.
