shutdown slow

My computer doesn't believe me the first time I ask it to shutdown. I have to
tell it twice. I've come back hours later, after I think I've shut it off,
and it's still on. It's not the "ending program" message or anything, it's
like I never clicked on shutdown at all. I've also noticed that it doesn't
seem to want to go into screen saver mode, even though it's set to.

It's a pretty new Dell running Win XP SP2. We don't use Norton, just AVG for
viruses and ad-aware. I searched for similar problems in the knowledge base,
but couldn't find anything similar enough.

Try this http://tinyurl.com/2h3yl (User Profile Hive Cleanup Service)

Something is hanging up. Here are some links for info on how to
troubleshoot this. Installing the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service is one
step to try as posted by Pennywise.

Is it a Dell laptop? Check the Event Viewer for one or more applications
hanging at shutdown. It may be a device driver that is defective for a
device that you may not even be using right now. Have you changed settings
in your firewall or other security programs prior to having this problem?

Do you have Skype installed?

Thanks-- it's a desktop, not a laptop, and I haven't changed anything
recently, other than avg's daily updates and scans. I think I also just ran
an ad-aware scan...

WOuld the Event Viewer still be good to look at? If so, where is it?

Thanks!

Thanks for these suggestions-- I will run through them when I get back home
today. I did try the user profile hive cleanup and it didn't seem to help.

Thanks!

Start | Run | eventvwr.msc | Ok

Can't say if it will give any clues but it's always worthwhile to check it.

OK-- I'm not sure if this is related to using the User Profile Hive Cleanup
Service, but last time I shutdown, I got this error message: "Access
violation: 00CEFA78 in module Skype.exe. Read of address 00000288"

I also ran the event viewer, and there are error records (Application,
Security and System), but I don't know what I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help!

You want either application or system.
You can check the times that the crash happened, usually it will be listed
as an error or warning. the list can be sorted by time/date. Double click
for more information.

Skype sounds like it's a VoIP program?

Might pay to run chkdsk.

No the error you got about Skype.exe is not related to the User Profile
Clean Up service, but Skype is probably the reason you are having the shut
down problem. I think there is a problem with the latest version of Skype,
but I don't recollect what the resolution is. I would check ask in a Skype
forum: http://forum.skype.com

the latest version of Skype seems to have fixed the problem, the earlier
versions you needed to select custom install and remove the extra's or what
ever they call it and all is good

Ok, thanks for the added info. Hopefully it will help Christine. I don't
use Skype so I wasn't aware of the specifics of this issue.

I went over to the skype user forum, searched shutdown, and found LOTS of
other people with the same problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, and
that seems to have done it. I also ran chkdsk just to be safe.

Thank you everyone for your help!!
