Shutdown problems

I get the following message when ever I shut down my laptop (XP Pro SP2):

"The instruction at "0x01540058" referenced memory at "0x5f08001e". The
memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program."

The first address varies each time but the 0x5f08001e address is the same. I
get several of these messages and must click ok on each of them until the
machine finally shuts down. Originally it is just svchost.exe that crashes
but lately it is also explorer.exe that crashes too. When explorer crashes
the machine won't shut down at all and I am left with hitting the power
button.

I did a google search on "0x5f08001e' did not give me anything because most
of the responses are in chinese. Those in english usually address some
programs running at the time that I don't have installed. A search on the MS
site yielded nothing. One older MS support site suggested waiting until SP2
came out but that does
not apply since I already have SP2 installed.

Possibly unrelated (or not), but most times that I go into windows explorer
it crashes. No real error message other than this app has encounter
problems, do you want to report it.

There are no entries in the Application section of the Event viewer but here
are the System messgages recorded as I shut down last night:

The Ati HotKey Poller service entered the stopped state.
The NICCONFIGSVC service entered the stopped state.
Application popup: Explorer.EXE - Application Error : The instruction at
"0x00f10fa4" referenced memory at "0x5f08001e". The memory could not be
"read".
Application popup: svchost.exe - Application Error : The instruction at
"0x00890f9a" referenced memory at "0x5f08001e". The memory could not be
"read".
The DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectedly. It has
done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000
milliseconds: Reboot the machine.
The Terminal Services service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1
time(s).
The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Reboot the
machine) after the unexpected termination of the DCOM Server Process
Launcher service, but this action failed with the following error:
The device is not ready.
Application popup: svchost.exe - Application Error : The instruction at
"0x01d70f7b" referenced memory at "0x5f08001e". The memory could not be
"read".
The Event log service was stopped.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Laura

I've looked through that page several times this week and nothing seems to
apply. I did disable ctmon.exe but that did not help either. Once
explorer.exe crashes nothing works.

Is there a particular item on that page that you think might apply that I am
overlooking?

What happens in safe mode?

Everything works fine. Explorer does not crash when I go into My computer
and I can sucessfully shut down. I decided that I will just suffer with safe
mode until I can figure this out. I'm in safe mode right now.

I would try and determine if it is software or hardware. Here are a few
ways:

1. Do a clean boot into regular mode:

If the machine doesn't crash, then you know it is something running in
regular mode that isn't running (or being accessed) in Safe Mode. Add
one thing at a time; however, I'm leaning toward it being video
problems.

2. Upgrade your video drivers. Get them from the laptop mftr.'s website
for your specific model machine. If that doesn't help, then consider
doing #3 below.

3. Boot with Knoppix, a Linux distro that runs from cd. If the machine
crashes when using Knoppix, then you know it's hardware. To get
Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast Internet connection and
third-party burning software. Download the Knoppix .iso from
www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd.

If the machine crashes with Knoppix, then it's time to call the laptop
mftr.'s tech support because your video chip is probably failing,
overheating, etc. and you can't fix that yourself.
