I've been meaning to post this for a while and will do so now.

I have a new hp pavilion a450a and love it. Great machine. One of the
most aggravating problems I had was that it would not shut down
properly. I tried for weeks and finally just gave up.

Then some weeks ago I was installing a DI-604 router and was having
problems with conflicts between the router and firewalls and antivirus
programs. I am running Norton System Suite 2004 and had their Go Back
program installed. I also had some other software firewall program
installed and finally had to remove all software firewall programs and
the Go Back program by Norton. Lo and behold my shutdown problem went
away and has never come back.

So, if you have a problem with shutting down XP dump Norton' Go Back
program and any firewall program and I think your shutdown problem
will go away.

Good luck.

As far as I know, this router comes with a hardware firewall, so you
should either disable this or deinstall other firewall software to
avoid conflicts.
