What does it do after youve selected shut down...Usually a power off problem
is followed by a restart, usually it pertains to a hardware problem, anything
new
installed...

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying... I'm guessing that you mean
when you click Start> Shutdown> Shutdown, Windows goes through the motions
of closing Windows but then it seems to stop and the computer never shuts
off all the way?

If this is a new XP install on an older computer (one with APM instead of
ACPI), check in Control Panel> Power Options. You should see an APM tab.
Check the box on that page to enable APM. That should get auto-shutdown
working again.

If I missed on what you meant, suggest checking out shutdown issues using
the troubleshooting procedures at this site:

Okay, this does sounds like it is a situation with the power management
version offered by your BIOS then. Did you check in Control Panel> Power
Options for an APM tab? If present, mark the box to enable APM.

You may also need to back track to Device Manager. Under Device Manager's
View menu, check to show hidden devices. Then look under System for
something with wording that is similar to "Legacy APM." If disabled, enable
it. If prompted to restart, do so.

If still no luck, it's possible that the BIOS support for power management
on your computer is not fully compatible with XP. If able to find a BIOS
update related to power management, you might want to give that a try.
After installing the BIOS update, repeat the steps above.

You're welcome, Ben.

Want to make one more point. So far my answer is based on the assumptions
that you've recently installed XP on this hardware and that you've never
been able to get an automatic shutdown.

If your XP system was able to shut down automatically in the past, there
are other possibilities. As I mentioned before, an excellent site with
troubleshooting guides for shutdown problems can be found here:

That's fine. No need to change that.

Has your system done an automatic shutdown in the past? If yes, a quick
test for you to try: Create a new user account. Log off of current account.
Log on to new account. Attempt a shutdown. Any luck with that?
