Shutdown problem (not at all)

I have a Toshiba Portege 7200 Series Laptop running Win2K. It will not
shutdown at all. When I select to shutdown, the screen goes into the "dim"
state with the shutdown/restart/hibernate box. When I select shutdown it
just returns as normal as though I had aborted the shutdown (i.e. cancel).
The machine did not have any Service Packs on it so I installed SP4 thinking
there may be a bugfix in one of the Service Packs. This has made no
difference. It does not seem to behave in Safe Mode either.

I am 100% sure there are no viruses or dubious looking tasks running in
processes.

Thanks

Edit: It does shutdown in Safe Mode. How can I troubleshoot the processes
that may be stopping the shutdown? Win2K does not have a built-in msconfig,
only an addon as I understand.

I think you have a program running that isn't handling the
WM_QUERYENDSESSION message in WndProc. This would in turn stop Windows
shutting down. I have created a user sample to demonstrate this on
http://www.gotdotnet.com which is written in VB.NET 2003

What I suggest you do is go into 'Task Manager' & 'End Task' a few items
until you can shut your system down. Then you will find the rogue entry
stopping it.

However, you could be correct & it is a virus etc, but check the above
first.

I hope this is of some help

Thanks for all the advice, although there does appear to be a virus. When I
used the msconfig utility I could see "sychost.exe" in the Startup items.
When I looked in the processes I didn't see it because it was nicely hidden
in the multiple svchost.exe entries.

I shall remove the viruses and report back.

Many thanks.

Do you have permission to host the MS Config on your site?

Didn't check them to be honest, but it found 7 in total. Now shuts down
perfectly. The only remaining problem is slow printing with a HP845c, I
think it may be related to a process called "tbatpack.exe" consuming a near
constant 99% of the CPU resources. That said the machine is actually running
fairly responsively so I'm not too sure, and that's a marvel in itself with
only 128MB RAM.

But maybe I should start another thread about that issue...
