Shutdown and logoff procedures

This will sound ignorant, but recently my PC has lost the
ability to shutdown through the system or logoff through
the system. The only way that I can shutdown is to
utilize the appropriate button on my tower. I cannot
figure out what may be happening, but I hope that someone
else has some suggestions. Please help!

What about trying Ctrl-Alt-Del?
