Shut down

Can anybody please advise I'm using Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and when I
want to shut down the PC, the message saving your settings appears (which is
normal), however the PC will not shut down, to shut down the PC I have to
power it off using the on/off switch, I left the PC on for approx 4 hours
today and the PC still did not shut down using start and shut down.

Colin,

The SP is 4, this issue happens all the time no matter how long its been up
for, and yes you can successfully reboot immediately, if you have anymore
advice I would be grateful.

Assuming this issue did not occur prior to installing SP4 I would look at MS
KB Q324446.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324446

When SP4 is installed there are some issues where the server fails to
release resources. This can result in the server taking next to forever to
reboot. Other issues you may notice if this is the SP4 issue include:
sessions that are not being released, increased login times, intermittent
loss of Terminal Service Manager operation. These are known issues with SP4
and as a result if you place a call into MS to get the above fix there will
be no charge. I have not personally noticed these issues unless Terminal
Services is installed on the server.

When you receive the fix from MS you will want to do a clean boot of the
system just prior to install. This will ensure the system is not hanging
onto any resources that may interfere with the install. A reboot will also
be required after the fix is installed.

In the meantime, rolling back to SP3 will also allow you to work normally.

Hope this helps,
